Game Description & Reviews:
Base Wars combines baseball, robots, and violence into an 8-bit masterpiece that is fun whether you're into sports games or not. When your batter slides into second base and is tagged out, a fight begins between your robot and the baseman; if you win, you're safe, and if you lose, you're out. Each player can lose 3 or 4 fights before becoming disabled for the rest of the game.
The Season mode (I forget exactly what it terms itself) allows you to customize your robots, purchasing upgrades, new weapons, better armor, and other things, adding an extra layer of depth to what would otherwise be a very simple game.
The graphics on field, and the little flashing square that represents the baseball, are pretty bad, even for the NES, but the combat sequences are sufficient. Comparing the baseball game itself to RBI Baseball (which is another I remember well) further confirms Base Wars' sub-par field graphics, but it is made up for, to an extent, by the combat.
It isn't a game that will eat up 40 hours of your time, but I remember it fondly from my childhood and would recommend it, if for nothing other than the experience, to avid retro-gamers. It's not the best NES game out there, but it certainly isn't the worse, and it can actually get pretty intense when the entire game hinges on a robot fight in the bottom of the 9th.
